We are escape room enthusiasts who have done 400+ rooms and recently returned from our Montreal escape room marathon where we set a personal record of 20 rooms in 3 days. We were impressed about the quality of rooms in Montreal and call it a true North American Escape Room Destination. The best games in Montreal are also some of the best in North America and any North American escape room enthusiast should make a trip up here to play games at some point.

Unlike some other North American escape room destinations, the logistics of organizing a dense Montreal trip are comparatively fairly feasible – all of the rooms of interest are within roughly a 2-hour driving diameter (even including traffic), and all of these facilities have multiple rooms, which makes it easier to plan extremely dense schedules.

Our readers may already know that the official and primary language in Montreal is French, although the whole province is very English-language friendly. Our guide is mainly geared towards Anglophone Montreal visitors who will be playing these rooms in English instead of French. The English experiences of these games were seamless; someone with zero knowledge of French will fully be able to enjoy these rooms. The game masters were enthusiastic and fully capable of performing their role in English.

Another neat feature of the Montreal escape rooms is that none of them require 100% upfront payment. Instead, they seem to take a deposit anywhere from nothing to one ticket for the entire reservation to one ticket per game. This was very appreciated especially as we planned a big trip, as it significantly reduced the upfront cost of our trip. In addition, some companies like Sauve Qui Peut offer discounts for playing multiple rooms in one day.

Most of these rooms were receptive for groups of 2 (at least during off-peak days), although a few (especially the long ones) had minimum team sizes of 3-4. For a group of travelling enthusiasts, a party of 4 is probably ideal. It will let you play the bigger rooms as a team of 4, and it will give you the option to split into 2 groups of 2 if desired for some of the smaller rooms. The rooms are priced per-player, which is a very favorable pricing scheme for groups of 2. All of these games are private, no strangers will be added to your group.

There are three “big” players in this market – these companies are well-established, high-quality, have multiple locations, and have multiple rooms in each location. The concentration of multiple great rooms in one facility again make Montreal a comparatively easy-to-plan escape room destination (compared to say, Los Angeles). The three main players are:

  • Escaparium (Laval, Montreal, and more). The Laval location has all of their best games.
  • Immersia (Boisbriand and Laval). The Boisbriand location has their best games.
  • Sauve Qui Peut (Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and Quebec City). The Saint-Jean location has their best game.

There are also smaller companies that are worth visiting, we were able to visit one of these:

How much do Montreal Escape Rooms Cost?

The average price for the 20 Montreal Escape Rooms that we played is $34.65 per person per hour. Longer rooms cost more per person. Most games on this list charge between $33-$35 per person per hour. These prices are in Canadian Dollars and are not inclusive of tax.

1. Wardrobe for Sale – Escaparium (Laval)

This is a rare 120-minute escape room that’s implemented as two 60-minute halves with a magnificent transition and a shared story arc. This company also made the interesting choice to not reveal the theme at all. Instead, it’s a complete mystery about what kind of 2-hour experience can exist inside a magical wardrobe.

We aren’t going to spoil any of the theming here. We will say however that the game makes full use of the 120-minute experience by constructing a detailed (and emotional) theatrical narrative that very strongly ties both halves of the game together. The theming in both rooms is distinct, whimsical, tangible, and a whole lot of fun to enjoy. We loved the involvement of all of the NPCs in the game – there are quite a few characters and they all play some sort of role in the story. The game was beautiful, intricately detailed, and one of the most stunning experiences we’ve ever had in an escape room. Out of the 400 games that we’ve played, Wardrobe for Sale is one of our all-time favorites and our pick for #1 in Montreal.

Story: You purchased a beautiful wardrobe online, which belonged to the late writer Mr. Jack. The wardrobe is pick-up only, so you arrive at his estate to pick up this one-of-a-kind item.

2. Forgotten Cathedral – Escaparium (Laval)

As of the time of writing, Forgotten Cathedral is the newest game by Escaparium, opened in December of 2022. This is an atmospheric experience, with some incredible subtle (and not-so-subtle) transformations of the environment that felt incredibly well-orchestrated and smooth.

The game has some of our type of cooperation puzzles – the kind where each player has a good reason to be in a particular space to do something that feels substantial, not just communicate information or push a button. The tasks feel important. Some of the cooperation puzzles are perfect for a team of 4 (5 is ok too), with each person at a station and feeling like they are playing a key part.

Escaparium takes full advantage of both their square footage and also their vertical space to make an experience that really is grand and exciting in multiple ways. The room is spookily-themed with a variety of theatrical events, and there are several intense moments interspersed around the game that are incredibly memorable. There are multiple set changes – each one feeling very different than the other. By the end you’ll feel like you’ve gone through an epic journey on your visit to this Forgotten Cathedral. This room is memorable, new, and absolutely worth a play.

Story: You are getting a tour through an ancient cathedral that is currently in the process of being restored.

3. Lost Island of the Voodoo Queen – Escaparium (Laval)

We’ve been in many simulated pirate ships before when doing an escape room, but this was clearly by far the best on-ship experience that we’ve ever had. Beyond just the ship experience, this game nailed the intro, many of the on-ship interactions, and the feeling of wonder while boarding and disembarking the ship. The set was expansive, very tangible, and encouraged us to just walk around and explore.

Story: You are gathering your pirate crew in search of the Lost Island of the Voodoo Queen.

4. Project R.E.S.E.T – Immersia (Boisbriand)

At the time of writing, this room is Immersia’s newest game, opening in March of 2023. There are so many sci-fi games out there, but this “metaverse” game was a fresh theme and gave us a novel interpretation of what a digitally-centric world might look like. Not surprisingly, it with references plenty of emerging technology. Impressively, it even uses some emerging technology.

This “digital world” game created its own near-future universe. There were certain actor and environment interactions, team debates about choices, and reveals during this game that felt ultra-modern and exciting. The room felt sleek, well-designed, and well-orchestrated. The core gameplay loop about “learning from your mistakes” was seamless. We loved this game and Immersia Boisbriand has really invigorated their offerings with their latest game.

Story: The year is 2035 and you and your crew have been sentenced to metaverse-based rehabilitation due to your crimes in the digital world. Project R.E.S.E.T. is an opportunity for digital criminals to gain their freedom if they show that they can learn from their mistakes.

5. The Falderon Forest – Sauve Qui Peut (Saint-Jean)

This game presents a wonderful magical forest with some well-crafted and beautiful sets. The NPC dialogue was a neat touch – while the dialogue was all pre-recorded, the NPCs really felt like they were reacting to our actions and our presence. The game also gives the players 4 magical items, each with which interacted with the set in creative ways. The game features dynamic difficult adjustment, which may give you more clues (or more tasks) depending on the speed of your progress.

This is our favorite game out of the games we’ve played at Sauve Qui Peut’s Saint-Jean location.

Story: In the enchanted forest, you and your team of 4 are tasked with working together to be able to restore magic to an ancient well.

6. Rain Corp – Escaparium (Laval)

This is not a Resident Evil-themed game, despite similarities in name between Rain Corp and Umbrella Corp. While both fictional corporations are large multi-industry conglomerates, Umbrella Corp went defunct in 2003 while the game Rain Corp is set in a near future heavy on robotics, artificial intelligence, and their use for military applications.

Like the other long games at Escaparium Laval, the set is massive and sprawling and is packed with fun effects throughout the set. We loved the incorporation of our NPC and how the game immersed us in a near-future universe.

Story: Rain Corp has a substantial investment in military robotics and artificial intelligence. The company and its killer robots may be getting out of control, can you and your team stop them?

Circus of the Lost Souls featured a playful set with a variety of amusing puzzles and tasks. The puzzles were interesting and go beyond simple tasks – some of them will require astute observation and a keen working memory by more than one member of your team.

Story: You have visited the abandoned Filioni Circus, a famous travelling circus that has been abandoned after a mysterious incident forced the circus to stop its show.

This escape room has one of the more unique and varied room layouts that we’ve seen in an escape room. The sprawling set combined with some memorable moments makes this game a special experience and our favorite game at Immersia Boisbriand.

Immersia Boisbriand is the company’s newer location. The games at their Immersia Boisbriand location are generally better than the games at their older Immersia Laval location.

Story: The Grand Immersia hotel is now fully renovated, but you are kidnapped and instructed to carry out a nefarious plot. Can you navigate through the hotel and break free from your task?

There was one particular memorable moment during a critical part of the game that felt perfect – we will not spoil it here.

Story: In this game, there is a girl who has been missing for over a week. You and your team know that something is wrong, so you go into this house to investigate.

This was an high-concept game that succeeded in making us feel queasy about progressing, this game is worth playing at this location just to experience the concept of what exactly you have to do. The “medical institute” setting felt somewhat more tangible and real than other “medical institute” sets that we’ve had to experience.

Story: The Salutem Medicina Institute is an institute that invite volunteers to subject themselves to a variety of clinical tests for drug testing purposes. However, something is going on with these experiments that would definitely not pass any ethical review board. What is going on?
