Cutthroat Cavern, 13th Gate Escape (Baton Rouge)

  • Theme: Pirate Caverns
  • Positives: WOW! This room is already highly regarded as an enthusiast favorite and also the #1 escape room in the USA. This room is the most epic, enormous, and eye-popping set we’ve ever experienced in an escape room. Cutthroat Cavern deserves our #1 recommendation and is worth a special trip for any enthusiast in North America.
  • Negatives: If you’re visiting from New Orleans, getting here is a logistical hassle. You’ll need a rental car, and Baton Rouge doesn’t have too many other points of interest. Additionally, you need at least 4 people booked in your slot or else they will make you move to a different slot.
  • Tips: Slow down at times and just enjoy the set. It really is special.

Tomb of Anubis, 13th Gate Escape (Baton Rouge)

  • Theme: Egyptian Tomb
  • Positives: While overshadowed by Cutthroat Cavern, the life-size (and greater than life size) scale of many of the core components of this room make this an epic adventure. Navigating all of the chambers (and experiencing the main one) is a blast, and almost all of the puzzles felt weighty and meaningful.
  • Negatives: The puzzle flow is messy, which doesn’t help with the huge amount of content that this game hides. The run-book is more frustrating than helpful, especially when you discover you need a hint but realize that it’s not completely clear how even to best ask for one. Also see the negatives for Cutthroat Cavern.
  • Tips: The hints are self-serve, we recommend taking them generously. The content in this room would be more appropriate for an 80-minute game rather than a 60-minute game.

Inventor’s Attic, Escape My Room (New Orleans)

  • Theme: Science Attic
  • Positives: We loved all of the science-themed puzzles in this escape room. It’s a small room, but the team at Escape My Room has packed in a whole batch of fun contraptions that makes playing this room a blast. Location is excellent for any New Orleans tourists without access to a car. Escape My Room also features one of the most delightful lobbies we’ve seen in any escape room.
  • Negatives: There are some areas in the room that may get a bit cramped, as well as a larger reliance on a “run book” to figure out what at times what to do.
  • Tips: This is a very tactile room – touch things and see what happens!

Agent 13, 13th Gate Escape (Baton Rouge)

  • Theme: WWII Bunker and Lab
  • Positives: This room has a neat mix of both puzzle types and scenic decisions – the format changes somewhat so it’s a little unpredictable what’s going to happen or what you need to do. Fun overall to experience and enjoy.
  • Negatives: The final sequence doesn’t quite have the same oomph or conclusion as some of their other rooms. Also see the negatives for Cutthroat Cavern.
  • Tips: The game gives natural guidance on what you’re supposed to be doing at any given time. Follow those hints and your experience will be more smooth.

Jazz Parlor, Escape My Room (New Orleans)

  • Theme: New Orleans
  • Positives: Jazz Parlor features a lovely New Orleans-themed set that is full of fun things to play around with and explore. The room features a mystery plot that goes beyond your typical whodunnit escape rooms – you’re immersed in an intriguing story to solve by the end (and if you do it fast enough, you’ll get a bonus puzzle!).
  • Negatives: We don’t have much to say here!
  • Tips: Like the other rooms at this location, explore a bunch!

The Collector, 13th Gate Escape (Baton Rouge)

  • Theme: Serial Killer’s Lair
  • Positives: Given what we generally expect from escape rooms with this theme, this “killer’s lair” is surprisingly expansive with a variety of interesting sets that your team will climb and explore through through your adventure. Fun large set pieces to play and interact with.
  • Negatives: The start of the game is not that engaging for large groups. This game is overshadowed by the other excellent games at this location. Also see the negatives for Cutthroat Cavern.
  • Tips: The hints are self-serve, use them when you need since there are some tricky parts regarding flow.

Smuggler’s Den, Escape My Room (New Orleans)

Image from Escape My Room

  • Theme: Pitch Black Room
  • Positives: If you’ve never done another pitch black room before, you’re up for a treat. This is a well done room of the genre, and will force you to focus on primarily touch and your memory to navigate and solve this room.
  • Negatives: Pitch black rooms don’t have set design. Also, to avoid chaos and confusion, these types of rooms are best for high-functioning smaller teams that communicate well with each other.
  • Tips: In the pitch black parts, touch everything! You’ll also need to keep in memory a mental map of the room. We recommend devising a system to quickly communicate to your teammates which part of the room you are at (e.g. picking a North and using compass directions). Ask to see the room in the light afterwards!

Death Row, 13th Gate Escape (Baton Rouge)

  • Theme: Prison
  • Positives: Like all other games at 13th Gate Escape, your team will be able to explore a variety of spaces in a well-done space.
  • Negatives: Like many (most?) prison escape rooms, this game starts off split-team. If you’re unlucky, you may be trapped in your cell with nothing to do while some of the other splits have to work something out. Also see the negatives for Cutthroat Cavern.
  • Tips: In the beginning, be observant about your environment. This includes areas both within your immediate surroundings and just out of reach.

Mardi Gras Study, Escape My Room (New Orleans)

mardi_gras_study.jpg

  • Theme: New Orleans
  • Positives: Like the other (non-pitch-black) rooms at this location, this room features elaborate decor true to the local flavor of New Orleans.
  • Negatives: This is Escape My Room’s oldest room, featuring a lot more traditional escape room elements (locks, etc.). It’s not as advanced as their other rooms.
  • Tips: Search thoroughly!

The Game Museum, Clue Carré (Metairie)

  • Theme: Games, from Old to New
  • Positives: The room is packed with an assortment of puzzles themed after the featured classic games. Great for those who are fans of (or appreciate references to) a whole suite of classic games.
  • Negatives: The set design is functional but unpolished.
  • Tips: There’s a lot of puzzles – keep organized and put finished puzzles neatly in a designated area of the room.
